Where Do Gnats Come From?

Screens are a valuable asset on the home; providing a barrier between the outside world and the inside of your abode from pests and debris, but permitting fresh air inside. But no matter how hard you try, flying pests seem to make their way into the interior of your living space.  Eagle Pest Services would like specifically shine the light on gnats that enter your home.

Fungus & Fruit Fly Gnats

Gnats are among the flying pests in world, the tiny little insects create a different problem.  Not only gaining access into your home only through an open door, open window, or obvious entry point, but they can get in the tiniest of cracks, holes, fissures, and even screens if they are designed big enough. The two most common gnats are called fungus gnats and fruit fly gnats; and these gnats are also known to be carried into your home.

Gnat Infestations

These gnats are not feeding on flesh and blood, but rather the fruit gnat and fungus gnat are often infesting jars of apple cider vinegar and consuming fermenting organics in your trash can. Typically, the better fed these gnats are, the more they are able to multiply. Within a short time span, these gnats are so dense that that they seem like clouds of gnats hovering nearby, or even dozens traversing the ceilings and walls. Because fungus gnats and fruit fly gnats are not invading our homes to feed on us, they have alternative methods as to why they are doing so as well as how they are getting in. As mentioned earlier, these gnats are more than likely carried inside, though they are capable of flying. The fruit fly gnats are typically brought inside from the produce purchased at the grocery store and the fungus gnats in potted plants.

Gnat Prevention

To avoid these common gnats infesting your home, there are some precautions you can take. Below Eagle Pest Control has compiled a list of preventative maintenance.

1) Screens: Refrain from leaving doors and window open without a screen and ensure they are smaller size to prevent gnats

2) Store fruit: Put produce in the refrigerator instead of the counter or table when you bring it home from the store.

3) Seal your trash: Consider replacing your trash can with on that has a sealable cover, or remove the trash daily so that foods can't ferment if you have an open trash can.

4) Clean: Good sanitation is essential for controlling a number of fly species.   It may be time to call a professional if you have an abundance of gnats, or any type of flies, appearing in your home. Flies attract spiders, and spiders attract other pests; as a part of the food chain.
