Minimize Overwintering Pests

There are many pests that intrude into Virginia homes and businesses in the late fall and early winter when the temperatures drop to unbearable lows and they want to escape the harsh conditions.  Some of these pests will fall dormant once they found a place to hunker down, or lay their eggs and others will continue to be active all year long and enjoying the warmth and comfort of your home.  With a little effort and diligence on your part, you can significantly minimize the number of these pests intruding into your home.   We at call Eagle Pest Services would like to list the checklist to reduce pest infestations this fall/winter.

Fall Pest Prevention Steps

Removing their natural habitats around your home can help keep them away from your home before they even get the idea to move into it. Start the follow projects to remove said habits from the exterior of your home.
1) Clean Gutters and Downspouts.   All of the leaves, sticks, dirt and other grit and grime that collects in the gutters and downspouts make a natural home for many pests, keep it clean and remove any debris on a routine bases.  Ensure the downspouts will direct the water flow away from the structure.
2) De-clutter. Clear away any clutter on the grounds by removing any piled up garden equipment and relocate them to the garage or shed. Toss out the trash, leaves and other debris are cluttering around the home. Any building materials like unused, bricks or wood piles, including firewood, should be relocated as from the house as possible.
3) Manicure Landscape. When distributing the mulch, be sure it is approximately 12” away from the house.  After you have done any fall pruning and hedging, dispose of the waste appropriately and do not let it linger. Regularly maintain the fallen leaves and avoid letting them accumulate.
4) Seal Outdoor Trash Bins. If possible store the trash bins as far from the structure with the lids consistently fastened. Insects and vermin are attracted to the bins looking for food and warmth.
5) Replace Light Bulbs. Replace your ordinary exterior bulbs to hinder the pests with the yellow sodium light bulbs don't attract insect life.

Exterior Pest Inspection

Finally, perform a comprehensive inspection around the exterior your home.  Below you will find a list of things to search for when checking the structure.
- Screens. Check the condition of your window and door, if they seem to be in need of repair or replacing, address the issue accordingly.
- Weather Stripping and Caulk. Make sure the windows and doors are properly sealed and the weather stripping and caulk are in optimal condition.
- Foundation. Check out the foundation for cracks and holes, and get those sealed up appropriately.
- Roofing. Evaluate the eaves, fascia boards, and flashing and if any wood is rotting or deteriorating, have them replaced.
- Access Barriers. Make certain the attic vents are sealed tight as well as any utility lines.
