Mice Eating Bait Without Springing Traps?

Having mice in the home really is never a good thing; between the destruction they can do and the diseases they spread, many homeowners attempt many methods in an effort to rid their homes from these vile critters, but mouse traps are often a waste of time and money.  So how are mice able to avoid the mouse trap? We at Eagle Pest Services would like to take an opportunity to explain just that.

How Long Does it Take to Catch a Mouse in a Trap?

Though it may seem fairly obvious as to why mice avoid the mouse traps, it isn’t really so. Mice perceive threats differently. Their inquisitive minds do not see a mouse trap and immediately know that is a spring-loaded death contraption.  Instead, mice adhere to their instincts in order to avoid the traps.  If you analyze a mouse’s behavior and characteristics, you can see how they avoid the traps.

- Great Sense of Smell. With a great sense of smell, mice rely on it to stay alive, which comes in handy where traps are concerned. Mice learn how humans smell; when they smell our scent, they know to stay clear and our scent is all around the trap; causing them to avoid it. When placing the mouse traps in a strategic manner, be sure to wear gloves before handling the trap. In addition to their heightened sense of smell to detect the human scent, mice use their sense to detect other threats. They will stay clear of areas where they smell deceased mice left in traps, or any lingering residues, as that increases their sensing that death may wait for them in those locations.  Always remove mice caught in traps, so they are not allowed to decay, and consider relocating the mouse trap.

- Mice Stay Close to Walls. Not only do mice have a keen sense of smell, but they also have a tactical instinct that puts them on high alert when they feed and keeps them hugging the walls as they traverse.  By keeping their bodies close to the wall, they have a higher ability to evade rapidly. Opting to set traps in the middle of the room is useless. It is much better to set them along the side of the wall in areas where you frequently see them dash. On the rare occasion you see a mouse fly through the center of the room, it is only done because of desperation to find food.

- Mice Are Always on High Alert. Once a mouse finds their sustenance, they will never let their guard down.  This quality comes in handy when the snap traps attempt to spring in the middle of their meals; reacting instantly when the trap is sprung. High state of alert and timid approach with their eating habits aids them from being trapped. When laying mouse traps, keep them in groups for when they avert one trap they have other to contend with; decreasing their odds.
