Species of Roaches Found in Virginia

Cockroaches are widely known across the world and with over 4,500 species found all over earth. Everyone has had the opportunity to know what a cockroach is. Of that whopping number, only 30 or so species are considered pests and Virginia is common ground for four of them.  These cockroaches are found anywhere and everywhere; in homes, businesses, trash heap and sewers. Among the common cockroaches found here are German cockroaches and we at Eagle Pest Services would like to touch on the basics to help you keep them away from your building.

German Cockroach Identification

German cockroaches are of the most commonly found cockroach species in the United States.  Within a year’s time, one female can produce six generations, making an infestation on a building occur quite rapidly.  German cockroaches share common features of any insect; six legs and antennae that extend from an oval shaped body that is about ½” – 5/8” long and though they have wings, they are flightless. These cockroaches have a more distinct color scheme as the primary color ranges from tan to light brown and starting from the back of the head they have two, almost parallel stripe markings.

Where Do German Cockroaches Come from?

German cockroaches only need a gap 3/8” wide to squeeze their way inside and though these nasty critters come in to your home or business through the gaps in the structure, ventilation, sewer lines, and other means. In addition to making themselves at home, they can also be brought inside your abode via stowing away in drink cartons, cardboard boxes, grocery bags, and second hand appliances.

What Damage Do German Cockroaches Do?

These cockroaches are omnivorous, meaning they will eat nearly anything.  Their diet often includes the general items including toothpaste, glue, and soaps in addition to human scraps, decaying matter, garbage, and nearly anything else in their path. They look for convenient food and water sources and prefer the warm and humid areas once they have gotten inside a building. They are nocturnal and hide in dark corners during the day and due to their preferred climates, they are often found lurking in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Diseases Caused By Cockroaches

Not only are these startling roaches a nuisance to have in your home, but they can be a health risk as they spread diseases and illnesses and induce allergies, asthma, and respiratory reactions. According to medical studies, the German cockroach impacts allergic reactions and asthma attacks, particularly more so in children. These roaches are also linked to six species of parasitic worms, at least seven human pathogens, and at least 33 different strands of bacteria because they will nonchalantly traverse through sewage, decaying matter, and other such environments. They easily contaminate surfaces they crawl across, including the areas where food is prepared as the spines of the legs and bodies pick up germs and bacteria.
