Winter Pest Problems

You would think that as the weather cools down, your concern for pests would be able to go down as well. Unfortunately, when the temperature plummets you have to be incredibly vigilant in pest control. Ants are one of those pests that can become a problem when winter comes. Eagle Pest Services is here to talk about some ways to keep ants out of your home this winter.

What Causes Ants in Your House

There are some ants species that will hibernate during the winter, but you can also have ants that will seek refuge in your home. If they can find a way into your home, they won’t have to worry about hibernation. Ants need three essential things to survive: food, water and warmth. Unfortunately, these three things are often found within the walls of your home. Ants like to congregate in places like the inside of your walls where they are safe and left alone. Luckily, there are several ways that you can work to prevent ant infestations in your home during the winter.

Natural Repellents for Ants

You may find that there are several tools found around your home that can be used to keep ants away. Here are a couple of options you may find in your kitchen already.

Vinegar- If you have vinegar and water, you have what you need to keep ants out of your kitchen. Mix 2 cups of vinegar with a bucket of warm water and mix well. You will be using this solution to give your entire kitchen a rub down. Ants detest vinegar and this will be just the thing to keep them away. Mop your floor with a diluted vinegar solution as well.

Spices- Using spices around your home can be helpful when battling an ant problem. They aren’t likely to come around if they smell red, white or black pepper as well as cinnamon. Sprinkling any of these spices in areas that you have seen ant activity will get rid of them.

Store Food Properly to Prevent Ants

One of the biggest reasons ants are attracted to your home is the food source you provide them. Keep your food stored properly in sealed containers to avoid feeding an ant colony. Make sure your kitchen is free of clutter since a cluttered kitchen is often times filled with crumbs. Even the smallest amount of food will attract unwanted pests. This doesn’t just mean human food. Pet food often attracts ants and should be stored in an air tight container. Avoid leaving your pet’s food out all the time since this will likely attract ants as well.
