What Happens to Spiders When it Gets Cold?

Spiders are a common nemesis for homeowners everywhere. They make their way into our homes and their webs start to fill all the corners of our walls. Every year there is hope that the spider problem might not be as bad as the year before with no luck. Spiders seem to have a super strength that helps them forge through the winter months. Eagle Pest Services is here to talk about the different ways that spiders will work to survive the coldest months of the year.

Spiders Have Antifreeze Proteins

This sounds like something from a comic, but no, it is a real thing. When the weather starts to cool off, spiders will instinctively start to accumulate glycol compounds in their bloodstream to help them get through the winter. This substance acts like an anti-freeze in their body to help them survive even the coldest temperatures without any harm to them. When the weather starts to warm back up, they will stop accumulating it and carry on as usual.

Spiders Take Advantage of Cracks & Crevices

There are some spider species that will build themselves a little shelter that looks much like the pods that house their eggs, to keep them warm throughout the winter. These can be found in the cracks and crevices naturally found in the environment around them. You may find them in the corners of the exterior of your house, the cracks found in the bark of a tree or other small openings that make the perfect home to weather out the storms winter brings. Some spiders will also build nests in the first layers of snow and actually hunt for prey as they live in the icy compounds. If the weather warms up enough, they will come out to the surface or emerge from their pod to hunt and return when the weather cools back off.

Where Do Spiders Live in Your House?

There isn’t a more ideal refuge than your home. Many spiders would be more than happy to make their way inside your home to wait out the weather. If you have any other pests in your home, this could be attracting them as well since the insect population doesn’t thrive as much during the winter. This is why it is important to keep other pests out of your home during the winter as well; so they don’t attract any unwanted spiders. Be sure to seal off any entry points as well. They can fit through even the smallest of cracks, but will stay away if the opening is sealed off.
