Ant Prevention in your Metro D.C Area House

Ants are a common pest that have annoyed everyone at one time or more in their lifetime. Seeking food, they can be attracted to crumbs or unknown food spills, especially of the sweet nature. Once they have scouted your home and found a food source, getting them to leave can be difficult. You may find a pack of ants and quickly grab the closest spray. You may viciously destroy the group, only to find new group hours later. Fortunately there are some things you can do to prevent ant infestations from taking over your home!

Eagle Pest Services Would Like to Share Some Tips to Prevent Ants from Entering into Your Home.

Seal away obvious ant entry points in house. Using silicone caulk, putty, glue or plaster, start by scouting out your kitchen and seal away the cracks, holes and gaps you come across. If you notice ants, back track them to see where they are entering your home and seal it up. If a trip to a home improvement store is necessary, temporarily seal it with petroleum jelly or poster tack. These temporary solutions are just that and they will deteriorate quickly over time.

Clean ant scent trails. For ants you have spotted in your home, use a soapy water solution to kill them and wipe away the trail left behind. For extra potency add mint oil or citrus peeling.

Remove ant attractants. Ants are looking for food. If none is to be found they will move on. Clean off counters after preparing every meal and snack. Sweep and vacuum areas where food is prepared and consumed to maintain any crumbs that have fallen. Be sure all food, ingredients and spices are properly sealed. Keep containers with sticky residue thoroughly wiped down. Be sure to check on toothpaste and deodorants where fragrances might attract ants.

Ants can't digest cornmeal. There are some bait traps and natural food you can use to kill ants off. It generally isn’t a pleasant way to go but it’s effective. Some foods that can be used are corn meal; a safer method if children or pets are around is it is nontoxic to pets and people. Ants can’t digest it and will meet their demise. Raw cream of wheat and coffee grounds are also safe and effective foods toxic to ants. Just be sure to put your weapon of choice in an obvious place where you have seen the ants scavenging for food.

Hire a professional ant pest control company. Having a professional on your side is more beneficial than any remedy as not only does their regular maintenance hinder ants, but also other pests that might try to engage in your home.
