Spring Pest Prevention Tips

In spring, so many fun outdoors activities and events transpire. Flowers begin to bloom, trees get their leaves, grass gets greener and all vegetation is revitalized. Animals are energized, birds are flourishing, temperatures are favorable and outdoor activities are being planned and scheduled before the hot scorching months take over. Spring cleaning, home improvements and everything in between gets noted and set to complete. But one thing should be kept in your mind when engaging in these tasks, and that’s the necessary pest control. Fortunately, there are steps you can take while you are already busying yourself with the tender love and care your home needs to help minimize uninvited guests from intruding in your home.

1.  Signs of Pests in Kitchens. The kitchen is a prime place for insects and vermin alike. Having the convenience of food and water close by is ideal. When doing your spring cleaning, pull out the appliances that are moveable, and remove all food and debris that might have slipped through the cracks. Clean out cabinets where food is often stored and clear out crumbs or expired foods. When storing food, keep it secure in containers that are sealable. Mice, rats, ants, cockroaches, and other pests are looking for a quick meal, eliminating the source will get them moving out on their own, if they should find a way in! Pantry needs to be thoroughly gone through. Again, dispose of expired food, and clean out any spilled food and crumbs. Keep all food and ingredients like flour and sugar, for example, stored away in sealed containers. Cardboard boxes, paper bags, and plastic bags can easily be gnawed through by hungry pests. Be sure to keep tabs on pet food or water left out for extensions of the family. Pests will easily devour pet food. Keep water area clean of drips and spills.  If pet food is stored away in original packaging, consider getting some pet food storage bins that keep food sealed.
2.  How to Get Rid of Bugs in the Basement & Garage. Basements and garages are ideal places for critters. It’s dark, secluded and cluttered. Clutter attracts many species of insects and rodents. Making nests out of the piles of materials is enticing. While doing your spring cleaning, clear away the clutter. An excellent rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you haven’t used in a year.  Donation centers, recycling facilities and trashing are good ways to dispose of the clutter.
3.  Dealing with Common Bathroom Pests. Water, as mentioned before, is an attraction to pests. Being on top of the water messes is important. Wiping shower curtains down after use and mopping water puddles on the floor is good pest prevention. Keeping drains clog free is also a good practice to keep silverfish and cockroaches away.

If cluttered piles like firewood, are needed, organize them as far from the house as you can. Keep landscape well trimmed and maintained. Securely fasten down trash bin lids.
