Are Wasps & Hornets Dangerous?

Sometimes it seems like wasps and hornets serve no purpose but to torment and attack. Their sting can leave you with pain for hours afterward. During the summer, they are a common problem and can get out of control if they aren’t dealt with as soon as you see one. If you have an allergy to wasp or hornet venom, then a sting by one of these insects can not only leave you in pain, but can be life threatening. Eagle Pest Services would like to help you avoid a run in with wasps and hornets this summer.

How to Deter Wasps & Hornets from Building a Nest in Your Yard

During the summer months it takes a bit of work to ensure your yard isn’t swarming with stinging insects like wasps and hornets. Eagle Pest Services suggests the following things you can do to make sure they aren’t in your yard are:

  1. Walk around your property every few weeks and check for any nests. Wasps and hornets look for any small openings to build them. They may also build nests under the eaves of your home and any openings in the siding that they can sneak in and out of. Destroying their nests will help to eliminate your problem.
  2. Keep your food sources indoors. Hornets and wasps are attracted to the food that you eat. Especially if it is high in sugar. They will be attracted to any sugary drinks and you should always be careful when you have left a can of soda or other sugary beverage unattended outdoors. They often crawl into the can and can sting you when you go to take a drink.
  3. Keep your trash in covered trash cans. This will keep food and other attractants away from any wasps and hornets.
  4. If you are having a gathering outside such as a BBQ, place slices of cucumbers around the party. There is an acid found in this vegetable that acts as a repellant for wasps and will help keep them away from all the fun.
  5. Hang up a crumpled brown paper bag in your yard. Wasps are territorial and if they think there is already a wasp nest in your yard, they will look elsewhere. If you hang it near your home, they will avoid building a new one there.

How to Avoid a Wasp or Hornet Sting

For some people a sting by a wasp or hornet can be life threatening. There are some ways to avoid this and keep you safe.

  1. Don’t swat at or aggravate a wasp or hornet.
  2. Don’t wear bright colors and be mistaken for a flower, which will attract wasps and hornets.
  3. Avoid wearing sweet smelling perfumes.
  4. Don’t walk around barefoot. This will avoid you accidentally step on wasps and hornets.
  5. If you hear loud buzzing, it is best to clear the area. They get louder when they are aggravated.
