How To Deal With Flies In Your Home & On Your Property

When you come home on a warm summer day only to find that flies have invaded your house you may wonder what you can do. The first problem is that not all flies are the same that you might see in your home. There are several species that get in homes and they each are a problem for a different reason. The most common way that people usually deal with flies is by grabbing a swatter or a rolled up piece of newspaper. Then you walk around trying catch them one at a time and waiting for the opportune moment to smack. Then you clean up the dead pest and go on to the next one. The biggest trouble with flies is that there usually is never just one. The warm months usually mean that windows and doors are open and that is the way flies get in the house. Flies are not a huge risk for bites but they can carry bacteria and spread it around your food preparation areas. House flies are often found on garbage and pet feces after all. Knowing what type of fly you are dealing with is a great start as well as determining what is drawing them to your home.

Eagle Pest Services Explains What Attracts Different Species of Flies to Homes & Businesses

House Fly: The most common fly that you will find in your home is called a house fly. They are often found in large groups around your home and are grey in color. They also have four distinct lines on their thorax. The fly is not very large so it can be hard to see any distinguishing lines and colors. They are a problem when they are in your home for several reasons. They are often found hanging around the walls, ceiling and other areas of the home during the day. The great thing is that they have a nighttime area that they are spending their time and that is within a fifteen foot area. The area can be cleaned up or covered to prevent any further flies from coming in.  They feed on many foods such as pet food and human food meaning they have a ready food supply as long as they are inside.

Bottle Fly Or Blow Fly: This is another type of fly that you may see in your home. They are the fly that has some metallic coloring in green and blue most commonly. They also tend to be a noisy fly when they are buzzing past you. They have a loud buzzing noise that can be extremely obnoxious. They are usually found outdoors feeding on decaying meat, roadkill and other organic piles. This is also why they are considered a problem because they will carry disease. If you are starting to see these type of fly inside you may have a breeding area in your home. You need to be sure that you keep the lids on your garbage cans closed tight and use bags to seal up any leftover foods.

Fruit Fly: Fruit flies, like their name suggests are most often found infesting overriped fruit or hovering around fermenting residues found in fruit orchards and vegetables plots as well as pubs and breweries. They are yellow, brown or mottled in color with bright red eyes. Fruit flies don't just eat overriped fruit. They actually breed in rotten fruit too. As well as other unclean places such as drains and as unpleasant as the thought is; cleaning utensils. They are also an annoyance as they tend to hover.

Cluster Fly: Unlike house or fruit flies commonly found in kitchens and other active living areas, cluster flies prefer undisturbed areas in your home such as wall voids and attics. They need these warm places to hibernate and overwinter. On sunny days, you may see large groups of them by windows as they are attracted to light. They are dark gray and olive in color and appear clumsy in flight.

Horse Fly: Horse flies plague livestock more than humans but they will bite. Bites are painful as horse flies use their mouth parts to slash open the skin. Horse flies are dark brown to black in color.
