Do Termites Go Dormant in Winter?

Termites are one of the most destructive pests you can have in your home. It may be alarming to learn that the total weight of all the termites in the world is more than the total weight of all the humans in the world! Many homeowners believe that their home is not at risk, but these pests can cause millions of dollars in damage every year with homeowners spending over two billion dollars each year to treat them. Owing a home in Northern Virginia means it may be under siege and you may not even know it. Don’t make the mistake in thinking that winter will keep them away.

Where Are Termites Found?

Despite the cooler winter temperatures in Northern Virginia, termites do stay active across Northern Virginia all winter long. In the winter they will simply dig deeper into the soil, well below the frost line to stay warm. They will stay there until the temperatures warm up and will emerge and find a new place to nest. The only problem is it may be in our homes. Termites need three things to survive, food, water and warmth and our heated homes in the winter make the perfect location. Many homeowners miss signs of termites in the winter months because they don’t spend enough time outside. Even the tiniest amount of moisture will allow termites to thrive. They are difficult to detect because of their tiny size. They can get through cracks as small as 1/8 of an inch wide and will chew through almost anything to make a home.

Early Signs of Termite Activity

Termites still need to eat in the winter just like we do. Termites do not hibernate so don’t let your guard down when the cold temperatures arrive. You may notice mud tunnels that look like wasp hives when they are tunneling. These tunnels can be found inside your home and out and will be near the home’s foundation. You may find wood damage because they like to eat wood. The damage will occur from the inside out and the wood will sound hollow if it’s tapped. Blisters on wood or bubbles on the paint are other signs. You may find piles of discarded termite wings and frass which is wood-colored droppings that are left behind as they eat through wood.
