Harmful Pests that Bite, Spread Disease, Cause Property Damage & More

Humans have a natural fear of bugs and insects. It may be due to the creepy appearance or natural instinct that they can cause us harm. Indeed, there are some insects and pests you should be fearful of and want to keep out of your home. While each pest varies across America, today Eagle Pest Services will help you learn more about the harmful pests founds in Virginia.

List of Harmful Pests Found in Virginia

American Oil Beetle – The American Oil Beetle is a large black beetle that has a head and thorax that resemble an ant. However, they have a very large abdomen that appears segmented. If you see one of these beetles, it is best to leave them alone. They have a defense mechanism wherein if they feel threatened or are just angry, they will spray a chemical which causes human skin to blister.

Bald Faced Hornet – The Bald Faced Hornet is actually part of the yellow jacket wasp family. Bald faced hornets are known for their black and white head and body. They are extremely aggressive, especially if you come too close to their hive. They are able to sting an intruder multiple times and have been able to even kill humans; mainly those with allergies to stings.

Black Widow Spider – Black Widow Spiders have lethal venom which, if you’re bitten, will require medical treatment. Luckily they are not aggressive and only bite out of defense. However when a massive population is found in or outside of your home it leads to concern. Black widows have a distinct appearance which makes them easy to spot. However there are many other sub species of black widows that may slightly change in color. For those who aren’t sure what a black widow looks like, they are all black with a greasy sheen to them. The female and sometimes even the males will have a red hour glass on their belly. The female also has a round large abdomen.

Carpenter Ants – Carpenter Ants are one of the most destructive ants found in Virginia. They are a large black ant that will carve galleries or tunnels into wood and like termites, can cause major damage to a home. They don’t particularly harm humans. It’s just their destructive nature that makes them an unwanted guest.

Cow Killer Wasps – The Cow Killer is sometimes referred to as an Eastern Velvet Ant. However, it is actually a wingless wasp. They resemble a large ant with fuzzy or velvety hair on the top of its body. They are red-and-black, or orange-and-black in color. They do resemble an ant, but they are a solitary wasp. They will have a stinger at the end of their abdomen. They are known to have the most painful sting which is why if you see one, keep away. Their stings aren’t deadly but they do hurt.

Giant Water Bug – The Giant Water Bug is a very big bug. It is almost five inches in length. They are dark brown and sometimes black in color. They have a pair of massive mandibles. Their mandibles are their defense which they use to inject a mixture of digestive enzymes. This enzyme really hurts. The bite typically doesn’t require medical attention unless a person appears to be having an allergic reaction. However, their bite is rated the most painful in the world, so again, don’t mess with them.
